Impact of SARS-CoV-2 Booster Vaccination and Omicron Variant on Antibody Levels in the Netherlands
A study conducted in the Netherlands highlights the impact of booster vaccinations and the emergence of the Omicron variant on SARS-CoV-2 antibody levels across different age groups. The study found that levels of vaccination-induced spike antibodies decreased over time, but booster vaccinations with mRNA vaccines significantly elevated antibody levels in all age groups. Donors initially vaccinated with Janssen or AstraZeneca showed lower antibody levels compared to those vaccinated with Pfizer or Moderna, but after a booster, their antibody levels were similar to those initially vaccinated with mRNA vaccines. In addition, the emergence of the Omicron variant caused a significant increase in donors with infection-induced antibodies, particularly among younger donors. These findings provide valuable insights into the impact of vaccination and variant emergence on COVID-19 immunity in the population.
