Study links incomplete Covid vaccination and hospitalisation risk for IBD patients

Incomplete vaccination, non-mRNA vaccines, and combination therapy are associated with increased risk of adverse events during breakthrough COVID-19 infections in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients, suggests new research. The study conducted by Emily Spiera and colleagues from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, analysed the Surveillance Epidemiology of Coronavirus Under Research Exclusion in Inflammatory Bowel Disease (SECURE-IBD) database to identify the risk factors for severe Covid-19 infections. The researchers stressed on the need for further research on the impact of the coronavirus disease for vaccinated patients with inflammatory bowel disease.
