Taiwanese study confirms increased risk of asthma in Thalassemic children
According to a recent study conducted by researchers at Chang Gung University College of Medicine in Taiwan, children with thalassemia have an increased risk of developing asthma (both atopic and non-atopic). The team said that they used the data of 800 children from Taiwan’s health insurance research database to reach the conclusion that among the group with thalassemia, asthma rates were 41.81 cases per 1000 persons. The researchers also added that the cohort of boys had a higher risk of developing asthma as compared to girls, with most of the children from both cohorts getting diagnosed around the age of 3.
