India’s Omicron cases cross 150; AIIMS chief calls for preparation against any eventuality

India, as on Sunday, has reported more than 150 cumulative cases of infection by Omicron, the rapidly spreading new variant of SARS Cov-2. The spiralling cases of infections by this variant of coronavirus worldwide, including India, within a short span of time after it was first detected in South Africa in the last week of November, has however made several countries worried about a heavy impact on the healthcare sector and India is expecting an imminent third wave the pandemic soon,  driven by Omicron variant. Concerned about the rapid level of case spike in other countries, the UK in particular, in the last couple of weeks, the  All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Director Dr Randeep Guleria said on Sunday that in view of rising COVID-19 cases, India should prepare itself for any eventuality. He said that whenever there is a surge in cases in other parts of the world, India needs to monitor it closely and be prepared for any risky outcome as It is better to stay prepared than to get caught off-guard. Meanwhile, the capital city of Delhi on Sunday reported a single-day spike of 107 new Covid-19 cases, which according to healthcare experts could be driven by the variant of concern.
