Injective infliximab may be effective in treating central nervous system tuberculosis: study

According to research, infliximab may be an effective and safe adjuvant for patients with severe central nervous system TB who are not responding to adequate antitubercular treatment and steroids. The research sought to evaluate infliximab in combination with antitubercular treatment and steroids in 30 patients with TB of the central nervous system. The primary outcome was 6-month disability-free survival. Patients who received infliximab were more likely to succeed, with reduced mortality and severe impairment at 6 months, than those who had only antitubercular medication and steroids. At 6 months, infliximab exposure was associated with increased survival and disability-free status. The study was, however, restricted by its retrospective approach and small sample size. The researchers came to the conclusion that, in carefully chosen patients with central nervous system tuberculosis who continue to worsen despite standard treatment, adjunctive infliximab therapy may be safe and effective.
