Insufficient sesame allergy labelling leads to severe reactions and even deaths: Review

Insufficient label warnings on food and drugs often causes an increased number of allergy reactions and even fatalities. A review conducted in a US hospital has found sesame food allergy and fatal exacerbations on the rise among consumers of sesame. According to a study published in the Annals of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, insufficient labelling on sesame food products has led to allergy exacerbations and even morbidity. Dr Kim Nguyen and colleagues at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia analysed over 360 clinical reactions to accidental oral exposure to sesame in 327 individuals. The team said that they found anaphylaxis occurring in 68.9 percent of the reaction cases with need of hospitalization in at least 47.8 percent of them. Epinephrine had to be administered in 36.4 percent of cases. Though 67.5 percent of the events were caused by packaged foods and yet, only 43.8 percent had label warnings on sesame allergy on the packages. The researchers called for correct labelling on food packets in order to avoid severe exacerbations and accidental ingestions of allergens which can be proved fatal.
