Investigating Neonatal Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) Infection Challenges and Symptoms

The complicated world of neonatal herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection and its effects on the central nervous system (CNS) are explored in this article. The article includes three cases to illustrate the various clinical traits and results connected to CNS involvement in newborn HSV infection. Case 1 is a three-week-old baby who tragically passed away with severe HSV meningoencephalitis despite receiving treatment. Contrarily, Cases 2 and 3 depict younger newborns who presented with widespread infection with skin, eye, and mouth (SEM) lesions early in the disease course. Surprisingly, despite both patients’ CNS involvement, they had successful outcomes. Given the variety of clinical manifestations of newborn HSV infection, it is crucial to keep an elevated level of suspicion and perform thorough assessments to guarantee an early diagnosis.
