The Link Between Obesity and Mental Health Disorders: A Comprehensive Study
A new study published in the scientific journal “Translational Psychiatry” looked into the link between obesity and mental health issues. The researchers examined a massive dataset containing data from the Austrian national register of inpatient care from 1997 to 2014. The study found that obese patients had much greater percentages of psychiatric illnesses than non-obese patients, not just physical disorders like diabetes and high blood pressure. Obesity was linked to an increased risk of a variety of mental health disorders, including nicotine use disorder, schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, bipolar disorder, depressive episodes, recurrent depression, dysthymia, anxiety disorders, somatization disorders, eating disorders, and personality disorders, according to the study. These data show that obesity is linked to a variety of health problems.
