Long Covid effects
A new study has shed light on the long-term effects of COVID-19, commonly referred to as “Long COVID.” The study found that patients who experience it are at an increased risk of developing respiratory disease, heart attack, heart failure, and stroke. The study also revealed that it can lead to a decrease in oxygen levels, which can be particularly dangerous for patients with pre-existing medical conditions.
The research, which was published in the medical journal JAMA Network Open, analyzed the medical records of over 70,000 COVID-19 patients who were discharged from hospitals in the United States between January and November 2020. The study found that it was more prevalent in patients who were older, male, and had pre-existing medical conditions.
The findings of this study emphasize the importance of continued monitoring and treatment of COVID-19 patients even after they have recovered from the acute phase of the illness. Healthcare professionals should be aware of the potential long-term effects of COVID-19 and take steps to mitigate the risks for their patients.
