Mammography screening improves breast cancer survival in women aged 40 to 49

The study examined the impact of provincial and territorial mammography screening programs for women aged 40 to 49 on breast cancer net survival versus programs that did not cover this age group. The researchers examined data on Canadian women diagnosed with breast cancer aged 40 to 49 and 50 to 59 from 2002 to 2007. Breast cancer was discovered to be the leading cause of 10-year death among women aged 40 to 49 who were diagnosed with breast cancer. The 10-year net survival rate for these women was 1.9 percentage points better in counties with screening programs that included women aged 40 to 49 compared to those that did not. The difference was greater for women aged 45 to 49 but not significant for those aged 40 to 44.
