Mediterranean diet could reduce Asthma risk in children by 50%: study

Children following a Mediterranean diet enriched with oily and fatty fish had a reduced risk of asthma, revealed a research by a team of scientists at Queen Mary University in London, led by Dr Seif Shaheen, senior professor. The researchers explained that omega-3 fatty acids present in fish are associated with reduced risk of depression and boosting the mood, and found to help reduce risk of asthma by at least 50 percent.

The research team said that the study included data from more than 4,500 children from the UK and found that those with an increased fish consumption had 51 percent lower chances of asthma, brought about by the gene variant FADS (fatty acid desaturase) which increases its metabolism in the blood.
