Mycobacterium obuense produces widespread non-tuberculous mycobacteria in leukemia patient

Mycobacterium obuense, a nonpathogenic, quickly growing mycobacterium, produced widespread non-tuberculous mycobacterial infection in an immunocompromised 16-year-old kid with acute myeloid leukemia. During leukemia therapy, the patient had a persistent fever and diffuse miliary nodules on a chest CT scan. Through mass spectrometry and genome sequencing, sputum, urine, and blood cultures confirmed the development of non-tuberculous mycobacteria identified as M. obuense. Amikacin, rifampicin, azithromycin, and moxifloxacin were used to treat the patient, which considerably improved his symptoms and radiological results.
