Neuro-ophthalmology consultations are crucial for correct diagnosis and enhanced patient treatment. However, there aren’t enough neuro-ophthalmologists to match the growing demand, resulting in a lot of referrals from emergency rooms. A study looked at 494 adult neuro-ophthalmology consults sought at a big hospital over the course of a year. Almost half of all consultations took place at night or on weekends. 70% of emergency department visits were for neuro-ophthalmic symptoms. The majority of recommendations were from eye doctors. Referrals were frequently made for papilledema and visual loss. The bulk of consultations were classified as high-complexity, with 44% requiring hospitalization. Hospitalists and neurologists were the most likely to request inpatient appointments for vision loss and eye movement difficulties. Neuro-ophthalmic evaluation was suitable for 90% of patients, and 59% required follow-up care. The study emphasizes the necessity of tools.
