New fungal pathogen Candida auris can cause bloodstream infections in ICUs
Candida auris is a new fungus that can cause bloodstream infections, particularly in ICUs. Patients with severe COVID-19 pneumonia who were treated with steroids and broad-spectrum antibiotics were the most vulnerable. The majority of infections were connected to central lines. More than 90% of the C. auris isolates were resistant to fluconazole, and 85% were resistant to amphotericin B. An initial high Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) score of 9 or above, as well as the failure to eliminate the source of infection, were related to greater mortality.
