Nurses’ methods for early palliative care fit with clinical framework: study

According to a recent study, outpatient oncology nurses use a variety of clinical tactics to provide early palliative care to their patients. The study’s goal was to see if nurses’ tactics matched up with a clinical framework. The researchers interviewed 20 nurses from outpatient cancer clinics, including staff nurses, advanced practice nurses, and nurse practitioners. The study discovered that nurses’ efforts to introduce early palliative care fall into three broad categories. First, the nurses shift their attention from illness care to how patients may live well with cancer. Second, they promote collaboration among multidisciplinary cancer care teams. Third, they tailor palliative care suggestions to each patient’s specific cancer path. The nurses bring together the interpersonal, advocacy, collaborative, and coordinating parts of their work.
