Omicron spread jumps from 3% to 73% in US in a week

The Omicron variant accounted for 73 percent of all sequenced Covid-19 cases in the US, a jump of 70 percentage points during the last week.  The spike was phenomenal during the week as the country’s spread of the new variant of coronavirus stood at just 3 percent a week ago.

According to CDC, the highly mutated coronavirus strain, which has taken over the dominant Delta variant, has been detected across the country currently.  The significantly increased overall prevalence of the new variant underscores fears that the rapidly spreading variant could produce a wave of infections that will strain the US health-care system.
