Omicron spreads to 57 countries; WHO chief says this variant will have major impacts on the course of the pandemic

The latest data on the spread of Omicron variant of coronavirus shows that it has already been detected in at least 57 countries and the World Health Organisation says that it can spread more rapidly than previous variants, indicating the likelihood of more countries detecting Omnicron-driven infections.

“Certain features of the virus variant, including its global spread and large number of mutations suggest that it could have major impacts on the course of the pandemic,” said WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, while talking to media on Wednesday.
