Study finds strong positive link between osteoporosis and COPD, with a higher incidence rate in men
Osteoporosis was found strongly associated with respiratory diseases and COPD in a prospective cohort study. Men seemed to be at a higher risk of adverse outcomes of this link. The latest study by a team of researchers on 3,05,072 participants of a UK Biobank found this close association of osteoporosis with respiratory problems found persisting even after adjustment for age, body mass index and comorbidities.
A wide range of studies had earlier established that men with osteoporosis are at a higher risk of all-cause mortality and mortality from cardiovascular disease, cancer and respiratory diseases as compared to women. However, the new study established that in men, osteoporosis was associated with a much higher incident risk of all respiratory diseases, including COPD and it persisted even after adjusting other risk factors. The researchers also pointed out that even though men experience higher adverse outcomes of the osteoporosis-respiratory diseases link, women had a high mortality risk from respiratory disease and breast cancer.
