PEG allergic patients can tolerate mRNA vaccines: Study

Patients who are allergic to Polyethylene Glycol (PEG) can still tolerate mRNA vaccines and  allergists may offer them vaccines after discussing its risks and benefits, confirms a recent study. The new research by Matthieu Picard and team from the Clinical Immunology Department at Hopital Maisonneuve-Rosemont found that patients who are allergic towards Polyethylene Glycol (PEG) can well tolerate mRNA vaccines, though Polyethylene glycol (PEG) allergy is considered a contraindication for COVID-19 vaccines that use mRNA technology because they are formulated in lipid nanoparticles that include a PEGylated lipid. The study, published in the Journal Allergy and Clinical Immunology: In practice, analysed 10 patients with PEG allergy and found that all of them tolerated it without any allergic reaction. The researchers pointed out that the lack of reactivity may be because the molecular weight and PEG doses in these mRNA vaccines were below the patients’ reaction thresholds.
