Person with APOE gene variation lose sense of smell at a young age: study
According to a new study published in Neurology, those who have the APOE e4 gene variation, which raises the risk of Alzheimer’s disease, may lose their capacity to smell at a young age. This diminished sense of smell might be an early indicator of future cognitive deterioration. Over 865 participants were examined for their sense of smell and reasoning skills at five-year intervals in the research. Those with the gene variation had worse odor perception starting at the age of 65 to 69 compared to those without the gene. They were able to identify an average of 3.2 out of 6 odors, but individuals without the gene recognized 3.9. Until the age of 75 to 79, the ability to detect individual scents was comparable.
