$12 million NHLBI grant to study personalized asthma treatments

The  National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute awarded a $12 million grant to a group of researchers to study personalized treatment for severe asthma. The grant will fund research on mainly three prominent mechanisms in severe asthma — S-nitrosylation signaling, airway pH regulation and androgen signaling — which serve as indicators for the type of asthma that an individual is suffering from.  The researchers said that their study would also help identify the relevant genes and variants related to asthma. “In a practical sense, if a patient comes in dissatisfied with the current treatment regimen, the doctors will have the option to decide on a personalised treatment based on any of the three therapeutic arms that would be an ideal fit,” they added.
