Portsmouth Regional Hospital Introduces Non-Invasive Treatment for Chronic Acid Reflux

Transoral incisionless fundoplication (TIF) is a novel therapy for persistent acid reflux available at Portsmouth Regional Hospital. The method involves forming a barrier at the top of the stomach to prevent gastric fluid and acid from backing up, with the objective of removing the need for lifelong drugs without undergoing surgery. Chronic acid reflux, commonly known as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), affects around 20% of the US population, with the elderly, obese, and pregnant women being the most affected. If left untreated, it can cause swallowing difficulties as well as an increased risk of esophageal cancer. TIF is a non-invasive technique that allows patients to go home the same day. It improves the quality of life for individuals who have suffered with acid reflux for a long time.
