Prenatal exposure to newer antiseizure drugs has no significant effect on brain development: study

This study found that children who had prenatal exposure to newer antiseizure drugs such as lamotrigine and levetiracetam had no significant changes in neurodevelopmental outcomes at age 3 when compared to children who had not been exposed. Around 40% of moms with epilepsy received lamotrigine alone, whereas one-third received levetiracetam. The researchers discovered that the mean verbal index scores at age 3 were comparable across children born to epileptic moms and those born to non-epilepsy mothers. Higher antiseizure medicine dosages in the third trimester, on the other hand, were related to lower performance on certain cognitive tests, particularly the verbal index score. Other characteristics that influenced verbal index scores were discovered by the study, including the mother’s IQ, schooling, anxiety, and the child’s gender and ethnicity.
