Psychological therapy for inflammatory bowel disease may help improve quality of life: study
The study evaluated whether psychological therapy may help individuals with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The researchers updated their systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials that compared psychological treatment to a control intervention for IBD patients. The study discovered 25 studies that were all at high risk of bias. Because only four trials enrolled active IBD patients, no inferences on advantages for remission or disease activity could be established. Psychological treatment had no effect on anxiety levels but did enhance the quality of life for people with active IBD. Psychological treatment had no effect on recurrence risk in people with quiescent IBD. There were also no variations in disease activity ratings between the two groups. However, psychological counseling was linked to decreased levels of anxiety, despair, and stress.
