Psychological therapy in inflammatory bowel disease may offer some benefit
There is mounting evidence that the gut-brain link is crucial in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Psychological therapy may thus be useful for IBD patients, although study findings have been conflicting. The researchers revised and analyzed their earlier review and analysis to determine if integrating more randomized controlled trials (RCTs) would indicate any advantages of psychological treatment. They looked through medical databases for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published between 2016 and 2023 that compared psychological treatment to a control group or routine care in IBD patients aged 16 and above. The studies looked at remission rates in active IBD patients as well as recurrence rates in stable individuals. They also looked at how IBD severity, anxiety, sadness, stress, and quality of life changed. The data from comparable trials was pooled and examined by the researchers.
