Pulmonary infection drug AB569 found effective in healing burns: Study

Research from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine shows that use of the topical drug — AB569 (a combination of acidified nitrite and EDTA),  which has been used to treat many antibiotic-resistant organisms that cause pulmonary infections in patients with cystic fibrosis and chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD), has been found to be effective in healing infections related to severe burns.

The researchers said that the epidermal restoration occurs rapidly because of the increase in anti-inflammatory mediators activated by the topical application of the cream. Daniel Hassett, the researcher who also holds the patent for AB569, said that “AB569 can be used topically to treat highly problematic dermal injuries including wound, burn, blast and likely diabetic infections.”
