South African study warns against new SARS CoV-2 mutations in HIV patients

A study conducted by a team of researchers at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, argued that a prolonged Covid infection in immunocompromised individuals, as in HIV patients, can lead to more transmissible variants of the virus. The paper, published in Nature, stressed the need for additional support for sub-saharan nations in the form of drugs to treat both Covid and HIV along with Covid vaccines. The authors also pointed out the stigma faced by HIV patients worldwide, and how the removal of discrimination is essential to tackle the current problem, which is serious and may impact globally.
