Single troponin I test for myocardial infarction in early patients can effectively rule out MI: study
According to a recent study, a single measurement of high-sensitivity cardiac troponin I below the limit of detection (2 ng/L) can successfully rule out myocardial infarction (MI) in patients who come within 12 hours of symptom onset. However, the sex-specific 99th percentile limits for high-sensitivity cardiac troponin I (16 ng/L for women and 34 ng/L for males) are insufficient to rule out MI in both early and late presentations. The European Heart Journal study also raised issues regarding employing a single test technique in early presentations, as well as the shifting performance of cardiac troponin with time following symptom onset. The researchers assessed the diagnostic performance of a single cardiac troponin I assay at presentation, stratified by age.
