Smoking was sole reason for COPD in 9.2 million people in Indonesia
The Indonesian Health Ministry, which analysed basic health research data compiled in 2013, reported that at least 9.2 million people in the country contracted chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD) as a result of smoking alone as a cause.
The data also brought out an alarming rise in the numbers of teenagers smoking in the country. Highlighting the urgent need for raising awareness against teenage smoking, the minister cited workplace chemical pollution and kitchen smoke as the other lead causes of COPD in the country.
The Health Vice Minister Dante Saksono Harbuwono, however, urged the citizens against smoking as its effects might also impact non-smokers including children and older people.
