Steroid Fear and Periorbital Eczema: Insights from a Pediatric Ophthalmologist
Topical corticosteroids can cause cataracts and glaucoma, but the absorption of these steroids is much higher across the eyelids than plantar skin. However, pediatric dermatologists need not worry about this ratio when using steroids near the eye, according to Sara Grace, MD, a pediatric ophthalmologist. She believes that steroid fear is harmful because not treating periorbital eczema can lead to eye problems such as chronic discomfort, corneal abrasions, and keratoconus. Dr. Grace recommends using steroids near the eye to alleviate periorbital eczema. Her insights were shared at the annual meeting of the Society for Pediatric Dermatology.
