Study highlights urgent need to improve access to oncology in Sub-Saharan Africa
A new study has emphasized the critical need to enhance access to oncology treatments in Sub-Saharan Africa, where cancer is one of the top three causes of early death. Experts project that if nothing is done, the number of cancer deaths in the region would more than treble by 2030. The Botswana-Rutgers Partnership for Health performed the study, which highlighted limitations in access to cancer medications and clinical trials in Sub-Saharan Africa. The researchers stressed the necessity of lowering medication costs, improving diagnostic and laboratory facilities, and expanding oncology staff training. The study also found special problems in breast cancer treatment, such as restricted access to hormone profiling and prohibitively expensive targeted medications. Inconsistencies in cisplatin availability and restricted access to radiation treatment for cervical cancer patients.
