Study: Insomnia may increase stroke risk in people with mild to severe disease
According to a recent study, people who suffer from insomnia, even mild insomnia, may be at an elevated risk of stroke. The researchers examined data from nearly 31,000 people who did not have a stroke between 2002 and 2020. Participants completed an insomnia screening questionnaire with scores ranging from zero to eight, with higher scores indicating more severe insomnia. Those with scores ranging from one to four were regarded as having less severe insomnia, while those with scores ranging from five to eight had more severe insomnia. Over the course of the nine-year trial, people with both less severe and more severe insomnia had a greater risk of stroke than those who did not have insomnia. Those with less acute insomnia had a 16% higher risk, while those with more severe insomnia had a 51% higher risk.
