Summer Surge: Cold and Adenovirus Infections on the Rise in Some Parts of the U.S.

After a retreat during the pandemic, colds are making a comeback in some parts of the U.S. this summer. Rhinoviruses, the most common cause of the common cold, are circulating year-round but may have spread more rapidly due to summer gatherings like weddings and barbecues. Adenovirus infections are also on the rise in the U.S., causing mild respiratory illness with symptoms similar to the common cold. Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shows an increase in adenovirus activity compared to earlier in the pandemic, although it appears to be plateauing. The Seattle Flu Study indicates unusually high cases of adenovirus this summer, with a higher percentage of positive cases compared to previous years. Rhinovirus and adenovirus accounted for a significant portion of symptomatic respiratory illnesses in King County, Washington, but COVID cases were minimal. Hospitalizations due to COVID have significantly declined since the beginning of the year. While UCHealth has observed an uptick in adenovirus infections, other health systems in different states have not reported notable increases in colds or respiratory illnesses. The prevalence of respiratory viruses seems to vary regionally, with some viruses not yet resurfacing this year.
