Telemonitoring Asthma and COPD could be significantly beneficial if it has an educational component: Review

A study conducted in the Netherlands found that telemonitoring Asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD) could be beneficial provided they include an educational component regarding different aspects of self-management. The work was a narrative review of 13 studies, 11 of which focused on COPD and 2 on Asthma. The researchers found that all the studies with an educational component had a positive outcome, while just one had a positive outcome without an educational component.  Telemonitoring helps patients measure their symptoms, share data with healthcare providers and receive education and feedback to improve disease management. In case of Asthma and COPD, telemonitoring is all the more important as these are highly prevalent chronic lung diseases that require ongoing self-management.
