Topical creams can be effective in treating atopic dermatitis – Johns Hopkins
Topical creams are widely regarded as one of the most effective treatments for atopic dermatitis (AD). The relevance of topical therapies for AD control was underlined in a conversation hosted by Dr. Shawn Kwatra, director of the Johns Hopkins Itch Center, and Dr. Peter Lio, clinical assistant professor at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. Dr. Kwatra discussed his own experience with AD and how it affects his job, emphasizing the condition’s unpredictability. Dr. Lio spoke about the Atopic Dermatitis Control Tool (ADCT), a validated tool used to assess AD control and its influence on various elements of a patient’s life. The discussion also shed insight on the role of cytokines in itch sensation, notably IL-4 and IL-13 stimulation of IL-31, a master regulator of itch sensation.
