Type 2 diabetes independent predictor of hepatic decompensation after liver transplantation

Type 2 diabetes is an independent predictor of hepatic decompensation and the development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in individuals with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), according to a research published in The Lancet Gastroenterology & Hepatology. The researchers conducted a meta-analysis of participant data from six studies, which included 2,016 people with an average age of 57.8 years and a BMI of 31.3 kg/m2. They discovered that type 2 diabetes was related with hepatic decompensation at the outset, and that this connection maintained after multivariable analysis. Participants with type 2 diabetes exhibited a substantially increased incidence of hepatic decompensation at 1, 3, and 5 years compared to those without diabetes in a longitudinal study. Type 2 diabetes and HbA1c levels were both independent predictors of hepatic decompensation following surgery.
