UK’s skin cancer cases at all-time high due to aging population
Skin cancer cases in the UK are at an all-time high, with around 17,500 new cases diagnosed each year. Over the next two decades, the number of cases is predicted to increase by 50%, owing mostly to an aging population. UV radiation causes damage over time and, with age, increases the risk of cancer. The increase in skin cancer indicates the critical need to address this public health concern. Climate change is exacerbating the problem. Rising temperatures, ozone depletion, and greater sun exposure all pose health and safety risks. Extreme heat waves enhance the risk of skin cancer for those with albinism in Malawi, where skin cancer accounts for 90% of deaths in this population. Because of a shortage of resources, their average life expectancy is only 30 years.
