Understanding COPD: The Consequences of Long-Term Exposure to Lung Irritants

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a serious health issue that is on the rise globally. It is primarily caused by exposure to lung irritants, whether actively or passively. COPD includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema, which make breathing difficult for sufferers. Common symptoms include constant coughing, phlegm, tightness in the chest, and difficulty breathing during everyday activities. People with COPD may have had pneumonia in the past and often experience flare-ups of the same symptoms. Additionally, they may experience weight loss and muscle mass reduction over time, leading to feelings of anxiety and depression. Risk factors for COPD include smoking, age (above 40 years), air pollution, occupational exposure to dust and chemicals, and passive smoking. Genetic factors, specifically alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, can also contribute to the development of COPD. It is important to be aware of the prevalence of COPD and take steps to minimize exposure to lung irritants in order to prevent this debilitating disease.
