Understanding FDG PET Scans for Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment

FDG PET scans are commonly used to detect cancer in the body. The scans use a radioactive substance similar to glucose that highlights areas of activity within the body that are suggestive of cancer. Doctors use these scans to identify tumors, determine the stage of cancer, and evaluate the effect of cancer treatment. FDG PET scans work by pooling in areas of the body that use more glucose, like areas with cancer, and show up as bright spots on the pictures created by the scan machine. Patients should avoid intense exercise for 2 days before the scan and follow a low-carbohydrate diet for 24 hours to accurately identify cancer. While generally safe, rare allergic reactions or low/high blood glucose levels can occur.
