Understanding Silent UTIs: When Symptoms Differ from Traditional UTIs

Silent UTIs are a lesser-known type of urinary tract infection that can cause atypical symptoms such as fatigue, muscle aches, brain fog, and unexplained pain. Integrative ob/gyn Felice Gersh explains that this type of infection occurs when pathogenic bacteria colonize the bladder, often without causing any issues. However, if the population of these bacteria reaches a certain point, they can cause an infection that has symptoms not usually associated with a UTI. As bad bacteria circulate in the bloodstream, they create a whole-body effect as the immune system fights the infection. This can lead to a combination of symptoms including fever, abdominal pain, nausea, back pain, and shakiness. It’s important to recognize the signs of a silent UTI and seek treatment to prevent the infection from spreading.
