Vitamin D levels not closely associated with COVID severity, but diabetes, COPD and CVD remained most prevalent comorbidity
Vitamin D levels in patients are apparently not very closely linked to the severity of Covid-19 infection, says a recent study conducted by a team of researchers from the Imam Abdulrahman Bin Faisal University and King Fahd Hospital, Saudi Arabia. The study, designed to investigate the association between Vitamin D levels and the severity or outcomes of COVID-19 disease in the wake of limited data and controversies regarding the relationship between the two, found no significant relationship between the vitamin levels and severity. However, the findings re-emphasized that the most prevalent comorbidity in patients remained diabetes mellitus, followed by hypertension, cardiac disease, chronic kidney diseases and COPD. The researchers analysed 203 Covid-19 cases wherein they reportedly found 31 patients with normal Vitamin D levels, 45 with insufficient levels and 127 with deficient levels.
