Despite advances in treatment, many patients with inflammatory bowel disease do not achieve or maintain remission of their symptoms. A major obstacle has been the lack of standard definitions and terms used among researchers. Experts recently held a meeting to propose a common definition for “difficult-to-treat inflammatory bowel disease.” Having a standard definition is an important first step to better understanding this condition and designing improved studies and interventions for these patients.
