Young people who smoke or vape have early indicators of atherosclerosis
Early signs of atherosclerosis have been seen in young people who smoke tobacco cigarettes or vape, according to a small cross-sectional research that was published in Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology. According to the study, proatherosclerotic signals were higher among tobacco smokers and e-cigarette converts than in e-cigarette users who never used them or in nonusers of either. Blood samples from tobacco smokers were used to quantify monocyte transendothelial migration and foam cell formation using an in vitro model of early atherosclerotic events. Proatherogenic changes were then compared with those seen in otherwise healthy e-cigarette users and nonusers. According to the study, persons who primarily smoked tobacco cigarettes saw an increase in proatherogenic monocyte transendothelial migration of 110% on average and 40% on average.
