About This Course:

Glaucoma is the most common cause of irreversible and preventable vision loss across the world. Up to 90% patients with Glaucoma in India remain undiagnosed. Many on treatment do not have glaucoma. This course should help you learn accurately identifying and appropriately managing glaucoma. The participants will be given preference for hands-on Basic and Advanced Glaucoma Sessions where the clinical examination, lasers and surgeries (Trabeculectomy, Implants and MIGS) will be taught in the wet-lab.

Objective of This Course:

  • Understanding symptoms and signs of glaucoma
  • Performing appropriate applanation, gonioscopy and disc examination
  • Identifying cause of raised intraocular pressure in secondary glaucomas
  • Medical management of glaucoma
  • Performing lasers in glaucoma (peripheral iridotomy, iridoplasty)
  • Understanding glaucoma surgeries

Meet the Instructor

Dr. Anil K. Mandal
Consultant, Jasti V Ramanamma Children’s Eye Care Centre Consultant, VST Centre for Glaucoma Care

Dr. Anil Kumar Mandal is a glaucoma specialist with particular interest and expertise in developmental glaucoma. Dr Mandal was trained at the University of Calcutta and at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi. He completed his fellowships in glaucoma and emergency ophthalmology at AIIMS. He was a visiting research fellow at the Kellogg Eye Care Centre and the Doheny Eye Institute in the United States. Dr. Mandal has won several national and international awards and has published widely in premier medical journals worldwide. His research focuses on the clinical and genetic aspects of glaucoma in adults and children, which earned him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award for excellence in science from the Government of India in 2003; he was the first ophthalmologist to receive this award. In 2009 he was elected as fellow of the National Academy of Medical Sciences for his contribution to science and ophthalmology.

Dr. Aparna Rao
Consultant Ophthalmologist

Dr. Aparna Rao completed her basic medical education from Maharashtra, followed by a diploma in ophthalmology from Guru Nanak Eye Centre, Maulana Azad Medical College, New Delhi and a MD (DNB) from ICARE Eye Hospital and Glaucoma Research Institute, Noida, Uttar Pradesh. She further did a postdoctoral research fellowship in glaucoma at the Rajendra Prasad Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi; where she also worked as research associate (ICMR, Delhi) for a couple of years. She then did a glaucoma fellowship at LVPEI, Hyderabad before joining LVPEI, Bhubaneswar. Her areas of interest are research on angle closure glaucoma, congenital glaucoma, pseudoexfoliation and stem cells. She has to her credit many publications in peer-reviewed journals and is currently a reviewer for three peer-reviewed ophthalmic journals.

Dr. Avik Kumar Roy
Consultant Ophthalmologist

Dr. Avik Kumar Roy completed his basic medical training from Medical College, Kolkata in the year 2006. In 2011 he did his MS in ophthalmology from Regional Institute of Ophthalmology, SCB Medical College, Utkal University, Odisha. This was followed by a fellowship in Glaucoma at LVPEI, Hyderabad. Currently he is associated with LVPEI, Bhubaneswar as Consultant, Glaucoma Service. His areas of interest include secondary glaucoma and glaucoma following vitreoretinal surgery.

Dr. Deepthi Molleti
Consultant Ophthalmologist

Dr. Deepthi Molleti completed her MBBS from Sri Devraj Urs Medical College. She then pursued Diploma in Ophthalmic Medicine and Surgery from JJM Medical College, Davanagere, and DNB from Sankara Eye Hospital, Bangalore. Subsequently, she did a fellowship in Cataract and Community Ophthalmology, followed by Glaucoma, all from Sankara Netralaya, Chennai. Her special interest lies in teaching, research, and academic activities.

Dr. G Chandra Sekhar
Vice Chair Emeritus and Consultant, VST Centre for Glaucoma Care

Dr. G Chandra Sekhar (popularly known as Dr GC) has been associated with L V Prasad Eye Institute from its inception in 1987 and is currently Vice Chair Emeritus. The institution of a Chair in his name the 'G Chandra Sekhar Chair of Director of Education' in 2003 was in recognition of his contributions as the Director of Education at L V Prasad Eye Institute. He has published over 200 papers in national and international peer reviewed journals, and has been a reviewer for a number of Ophthalmology journals. He holds the position of Clinical Professor at the University of Rochester and has been a Visiting Professor at University of California; San Diego, USA. Dr GC has served as the President of the Glaucoma Society of India (2005-06). He has been a member of the Glaucoma Research Society since 2005, and has served on the Clinical Guidelines Committee of ICO. Dr GC has been a Governor of the World Glaucoma Association Board from 2013 to 2017.

Dr. Gazella B. Warjri
Consultant Ophthalmologist

Gazella Bruce Warjri completed her medical graduation from Gauhati Medical College and Hospital, Guwahati and did her post-graduation from ESI-PGIMSR, Basaidarapur, New Delhi. During her senior residency at the prestigious Dr Rajendra Prasad Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, she trained in Glaucoma and Neuro-ophthalmology. A National Talent Search and State Talent search awardee, Dr Warjri has several papers in peer-reviewed journals to her credit. She has presented in many national and international conferences and recently received 2nd prize for the best paper at the annual Delhi Ophthalmological Society Conference - 2021. The area of her clinical interest is primary angle-closure glaucoma (having a huge burden on total blindness in India), its causes and its mechanism. She is keen on finding better diagnosis and management protocols for it.

Dr. K. Gowri Pratinya
Faculty, Glaucoma, LVPEI, Hyderabad

Dr. Gowri Pratinya Kolipaka obtained her M.B.B.S degree from Mamata Medical College in 2012, and DNB (Ophthalmology) from Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai, where she was awarded the Gold Medal. She then pursued a long-term fellowship in Glaucoma at LV Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad. She is consultant in the department of Glaucoma at LV Prasad Eye Institute. She is closely associated with academic training and research initiatives in the Department. Her areas of interests include secondary glaucomas and imaging in glaucoma.

Dr. Mayank Rai
Consultant Ophthalmologist

Dr. Mayank Rai has completed his primary medical education from Kasturba Medical College, Manipal at Karnataka. He then completed his DNB in Ophthalmology from JPM Rotary club of Cuttack eye hospital and research centre, Cuttack, Odisha. Subsequently, he pursued a 2-year fellowship in Glaucoma from L V Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad. Dr Mayank's clinical interests include cataract surgeries, glaucoma surgeries (Trabeculectomy and Glaucoma drainage devices), post keratoplasty glaucoma and congenital glaucoma. His research focuses on reducing the incidence and morbidity related to blindness secondary to glaucoma. He has presented at various national and international conferences and has published in many international journals.

Dr. Nikhil Choudhari
Consultant, VST Centre for Glaucoma Care

Dr. Nikhil did his DNB (Ophthalmology) from Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai, followed by a long-term fellowship in glaucoma from LVPEI, Hyderabad. He was a Glaucoma and Neuro-ophthalmology consultant at Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai from 2006 to 2010. He was a co-investigator of a couple of population-based glaucoma studies. He has made several international and national presentations, published in peer-reviewed journals and is a co-author of Sankara Nethralaya’s Atlas of Neuro-ophthalmology. He has won several awards, including the ‘GSI-Pfizer Best Paper Award’ at the 4th SEAGIG International Glaucoma Conference in 2006. Currently he is a consultant at LVPEI and takes care of patients with disorders of the optic nerve, including glaucoma. He is a member of the Glaucoma Society of India and the All India Ophthalmological Society.

Dr. Nibedita Sahoo
Consultant Ophthalmologist

Dr. Nibedita Sahoo completed her MBBS from VSS Medical College and Hospital, Sambalpur University, Odisha, with a Gold Medal in Medicine. Later she pursued her MS in Ophthalmology from MKCG Medical College, Berhampur, followed by a long-term fellowship in Comprehensive Ophthalmology and Cataract Surgery. Subsequently, Dr Sahoo completed sub-speciality training in Glaucoma from L V Prasad Eye Institute and joined as a faculty. Her areas of clinical interest include Angle-closure Glaucoma and Secondary Glaucoma.

Dr. Ramyashri S.
Consultant Ophthalmology

Dr. Ramyashri completed her medical graduation from M S Ramaiah medical college, Bangalore and then pursued her post-graduation training in ophthalmology from Regional Institute of Ophthalmology, Minto eye Hospital Bangalore. She continued her long-term training in glaucoma in the same institute before practising in Bangalore. She pursued long-term fellowship in glaucoma at LVPEI before joining here as faculty.

Dr. Siddharth Dikshit
Consultant Ophthalmologist, VST Centre for Glaucoma Care

Dr. Siddharth Dikshit completed his Diploma in Ophthalmology from Christian Medical College, Vellore and joined L V Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad for his DNB. He pursued his interest in Glaucoma and his long-term fellowship at L V Prasad Eye Institute as the Chief Fellow. His main areas of interest are stem cells in glaucoma, angle closure glaucoma, pediatric glaucoma and secondary glaucoma. He has special interest in innovating modifications in glaucoma surgery to make it more effective and safer for patients. His work has been presented in papers, posters and videos in national and international conferences and published in international journals.

Dr. Sirisha Senthil
Head, VST Centre for Glaucoma Care

Dr. Sirisha Senthil completed her medical education from Rajah Muthiah Medical College, Annamalai University, followed by postgraduate training in ophthalmology from Aravind Eye Hospital, Madurai, Tamil Nadu, securing a first rank in ophthalmology and otorhinolaryngology from the university (1993-1994). She did her FRCS in Ophthalmology from Edinburgh in 2000, followed by a fellowship in glaucoma at LVPEI and training in contact lens, phacoemulsification and small incision cataract surgery at Chennai and Madurai. She worked at several hospitals as registrar, assistant professor and consultant before joining LVPEI in 2007. She is an investigator for several studies, has published scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals and co-authored a book ‘Clinical Ophthalmology Made Easy’. She has presented over 60 papers at national and international forums. She received the “Best scientific paper” award at the Glaucoma Society meeting in 2007, APOC 2012, APAO and AIOS 2013, and “Best video” award at GSI in 2007, 2009, 2011 and 2012, Fusion 2012, and WGC 2015. She specialises in managing refractory adult and paediatric glaucoma. Her other areas of interest are glaucoma drainage implants and managing combined cataract and glaucoma.
