Fetal medicine is also referred as perinatology, also referred as maternal- Fetal medicine (MFM). It covers a broad spectrum of conditions that can be diagnosed before birth. It also focuses on managing health concerns which a mother and foetus may experience before, during, and immediately after pregnancy. Various health services provided under fetal medicine to expectant mothers are genetic counselling, diagnostic testing and effective therapies. Various health conditions treated under fetal medicine are HIV, pregnancy induced hypertension, obesity and diabetes, pre-term births, problems with the foetus such as congenital anomalies, Multiple gestation – twins, triplets, or other multiples. Various non-invasive technologies involved are isolation of fetal DNA and RNA in maternal serum, NMR imaging.

Dr. Ranjit Akolekar is the Clinical Lead at the Medway Fetal and Obstetric Medicine Centre (MFMC). He is a clinical academic and researcher affiliated to the Institute of Medical Sciences at the Canterbury Christ Church University. He is actively involved in postgraduate medical education and helped set up a higher academic PhD degree course at the Canterbury Christ Church University for postgraduate medical trainees.
