Why do we celebrate World Red Cross Day?
World Red Cross Day and Red Crescent Day (Red Crescent is the name used in Muslim countries) are celebrated on the 8th of May each year. This date is the anniversary of the birth of Henry Dunant, who was born on 8 May 1828. He was the founder of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the recipient of the first Nobel Peace Prize. World Red Cross day is dedicated to the people who suffer from the shortage of food, several natural calamities, war as well as from an epidemic disease. Basic amenities are also provided to the people who are really in need. Many governments and private organizations become active members to help needy people who suffer through several disasters.
The programs undertaken by them can put under 4 parts; the promotion of humanitarian principles and values; health and care, disaster response, and disaster preparedness.
The motto of the Red Cross Society:
Inter Arma Caritas; Per humanitatem ad pacem (Latin) meaning Between the arms of his love; During the culture of peace.
