GERD Trends: A Growing Concern Among Younger Populations

Recent data reveals a concerning rise in GERD among younger adults, challenging its traditional association with older age groups. A study analysed population trends and found the largest increase in GERD diagnoses occurred in patients aged 30-39, suggesting evolving risk factors in this demographic. While obesity, female sex, and Caucasian ethnicity remained predominant characteristics, PPI prescription patterns followed incidence trends, with the greatest usage growth in younger adults. These findings highlight shifting demographics in GERD, warranting heightened clinical awareness, especially in younger patients. Clinicians should remain attentive to these shifting patterns when evaluating reflux symptoms across all adult age groups.
