Lifestyle and Health Factors Strongly Influence GERD Risk

Several lifestyle and dietary factors are linked to the prevalence of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). A recent study found that the condition was more common in older adults and women. Risk factors included smoking, alcohol use, depression, and high intake of sweets and desserts. High waist-hip ratio and visceral fat also increased GERD risk. In contrast, higher physical activity levels and greater intake of fiber and dairy were linked to lower odds of GERD. The findings suggest that lifestyle factors, such as diet, smoking, and physical activity, are significantly associated with GERD prevalence. Addressing these may help manage or reduce the likelihood of GERD in affected individuals.
