COPD and GERD: Understanding the Connection

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is often accompanied by Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), affecting 17-78% of patients. GERD arises from mechanisms like weakened lower esophageal sphincter pressure, altered motility, or respiratory factors such as lung hyperinflation and medications affecting sphincter tone. This comorbidity may worsen COPD severity, increase exacerbation risk, and impact quality of life. Managing GERD through medical or surgical options could improve COPD outcomes, but tailored treatment remains essential. Recognizing and addressing GERD in COPD care highlights a potential pathway to reduce disease burden, underscoring the need for integrated treatment approaches
