Impact of a Wearable Device on Nocturnal GERD Symptoms

Nocturnal gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a common condition that significantly impacts sleep and quality of life. This double-blind, randomized trial assessed the effectiveness of a wearable electronic device for sleep positional therapy in patients with nocturnal gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Patients were assigned to either the intervention group, where the device vibrated when in the right lateral position, or to a sham group. The intervention group saw a 44% treatment success rate, significantly higher than the 24% in the sham group (P = .03). Additionally, the device helped increase time spent sleeping in the left lateral position, leading to more reflux-free nights and improved nocturnal GERD symptoms.
